Ida Applebroog could be considered many things. Some have called her a sculptor or book artist and others have called her a painter and conceptual artist. However, to Applebroog, she just makes art.
Through her use of clay and paint, Applebroog is able to create pieces that embody notions such as violence, discrimination, and power. Applebroog also considered the structure of her pieces to be just as important as the pieces itself, often employing whatever material she used to paint on as part of the presentation of her works.
Applebroog's pieces are definitely not for everyone. Her sculptures of the female body are a little strange, due to their rushed, semi-representational look to them. Her other pieces are odd as well. Applebroog would take pictures of her sculptures and Photoshop eyes, mouths, and hair on them. For some she would paint over them too.
These pieces may not find favor with some viewers, but to Applebroog, her works are necessary.
