Richard Serra

According to Richard Serra, his works come out of the work itself, through the process and concept.
The media Serra works with mainly consists of steel and lead.

Serra's pieces have definitely been influenced by the work he did when he was younger. Serra used to work at a steel mill, and the materials he worked with then are the materials he works with now as an artist. Serra is also interested in how different elements work together in his art and how he can present those elements in unexpected ways.
Space is an element that is used frequently in Serra's works. His enormous works both encloses space and takes up space. With some of Serra's pieces, the work itself is solely about space. Serra incorporates this kind of spiral composition in his works as well as he tries to create movement and elasticity in a material that's fairly static and rigid.
Although Serra's art is mostly made up of metal, you can frequently see him drawing in his notebook at his work sites. To Serra, drawing is a way to stay in tune with life and to help him actually see what he's looking at.
