According to Robert Ryman, a painting has to look easy, as if it just occurred naturally. With his fairly minimalist pieces, it is safe to say that he is successful with this goal. Ryman mostly works with paint which he uses to cover various materials such as wood, plastic, metal, paper, and canvas.
There is no hidden or deep meaning behind Ryman's works. The piece is just that. If it's a piece of wood with white paint on it, then it's a piece of wood with white paint on it, nothing more, nothing less. Ryman also believes that paintings are meant to give pleasure to the viewer. So the audience and what they think are always kept in mind when he makes a painting.
As said before, Ryman's art is very minimalist. A lot of them are just a piece of wood or canvas that's painted white. Sometimes other colors are used or only a small square portion of the material is painted, but the majority of his art are white paintings that cover the entire material being used. The paint is applied very heavy and thick in impasto style and the materials being painted on are usually square in shape.
Music has had a big influence on the way Ryman paints. Just like how a musician has to learn an instrument and learn the structure to make music, Ryman has applied the same principles to painting. First, he learns about paint and then learns what he can do with it.
