Things are not always what they seem, and that's just fine with Yinka Shonibare MBE when it comes to his art. To make his pieces, Shonibare uses fabric, ink, mannequins, taxidermy animals, paint, magazines, and newspapers.
Pretty much all of Shonibare's art has to do with history. His pieces touch base on the Aristocracy, the French Revolution, and even modern times. Shonibare's works are about culture as well as certain pieces explore the origins of different aspects of different ways of life.
Shonibare's batiks are used often in his works. He uses them to clothe his headless mannequins which he arranges in a variety of poses. The batiks are very colorful and have an African flare to them. Shonibare also does these circular paintings that are reminiscent of his batiks and does collages as well. His collages are a mixture of his own original drawings, his batiks, and certain pages from newspapers and magazines.
After taking a long break, Shonibare has decided not too long ago to draw again. Now his goal is to make his drawings something more than the subject matter he's trying to depict.
