David Altmejd

When you bring media such as crystals, gold chain, bondage gear, taxidermy animals, plaster, glitter, thread, minerals, mirrors, and Plexiglas together, you would probably get one jumbled mess. However, when David Altmejd brings these materials together, the result is art.
As a young child, Altmejd has been captivated by the idea of bringing anything into existence just by drawing it. Today, he imbues that captivation of life, decay, death, and spirituality into his sculptures. Giving his sculptures a sense of energy and being alive is also a goal he tries to reach in the completion of his pieces.

Many of Altmejd's works have an ethereal feel to them. Although solid, his works feel untouchable, unreachable. Some pieces appear scientific in nature, yet have a fluid sense of harmony attributed to them. What Altmejd tried to accomplish in a few of his works was an abstracted look from far away. You can't really tell what it is, but when you get closer, you begin to recognize a coherent picture and the piece begins to make sense.
